The interim verdict: your preferences lie with romanticism. The image of an eccentric artist, with long hair and a beard, some questionable beret and a velvet jacket is one of the strongest images produced by romanticists. Before the style emerged the artists never stood out from the crowd in terms of appearance.
It was romanticists who first set art in opposition to life. In pursuit of their ideal, which was freedom, they resorted to subjects and images that did not comply with the generally accepted standards. In the world as seen by a romanticist artist the individual prevails over the universal, feelings and passion take the upper hand over duty and reason, fantasy replaces the norm, and the universal order gives the floor to chaos. Romanticists glorified everything exotic and extravagant. Their heroes were filibusters, vagabonds, revolutionaries and other queer sorts of fellows. The artistic subjects, techniques, expressive means and role models were revised to fit the new vision of the world.
