Landscape is the genre that best presents the expressive qualities of colour so thoroughly examined by the fauvists. The artists took the basic colour combinations and themes from nature and escalated them to the point of breaking the common perception to live their own lives and inducing the raw emotions devoid of all reasoning.

They used shadowless local color, violent contrasts and sharp contours to separate the colour elements of the canvases. The perspective, space and relief are nothing, the colour is everything! Fauvist landscapes are expressive, dynamic, emotional and bold. Their artistic purpose is quite different from realism that opted to represent the plain reality, or from romanticists who used nature as the background for conveying the inner struggle of a person, or from impressionism whose message was to capture the fleeting moment.

Fauvist paintings are meant to strike, astonish and disturb the viewer, calling for basic, and thus vehement emotions and feelings. The genre of landscape perfectly conveys the message: we are part of nature, the source we derive our energy and power, the inspiration and confidence from, and the raw fauvist landscapes are by definition capable of turning us back to our basic instincts, providing energy and inspiration.
