Style: art brut and outsider art <\/strong><\/p>\n

The terms \u201cart brut\u201d and \u201coutsider art\u201d are highly controversial and bring forth a lot of debate on whether they stand for the same artistic phenomenon or different ones. Originally\u00a0“art brut” (\u201craw art\u201d) referred to works of mental patients, challenged people, prisoners \u2013 any person deemed misfit from the point of view of the society. Art brut artists did not undergo any artistic training, and therefore were not subjected to cultural and artistic stereotypes<\/strong>, their works are intuitive and do not follow any common templates. The term \u201coutsider art\u201d emerged later and also embraced children and any gifted people who work intuitively, not being professional artists, and moreover not considering themselves as such. Art brut stands for pure creative process, intuitive, and even compulsive, that comes directly from the subconscious and reveals the unconscious, internal thirst for creative expression that is as inherent to us as it was to ancient people. And therefore it is impossible to paint an art brut painting on purpose \u2013 the purpose itself means that the creative process is limited by the mind and the goal, and these works can be viewed as kitsch<\/a><\/span>, expressionism<\/a><\/span>, anything else but art brut. Despite that, some modern artists who are sane and even successful, call themselves art brut artists \u2013 and so the issue remains open. Outsiders is a broad term \u2013 please don\u2019t misread for marginalized persons, since the extremes modern artists run to often stink of marginal behaviors, in fact being just PR moves. Outsiders and art brut artists use simple, nonclassical materials, they distort, or rather create (since they are not aware of the rules) their own principles of composition, colouring and perspective. These paintings induce the primal fear before the unknown, the anxiety, inapprehension and the desire to know and understand \u2013 it might be true to say that no other style in fine arts has moved closer to the genuine, unbiased, sincere image of a man as he really is, with no taint of civilization with its inevitable hypocracy. This makes art brut so emotionally open and understandable to anybody \u2013 you might be shocked, amazed or appalled, but you will not stay indifferent.<\/div>

A person who chooses art brut paintings is extremely vulnerable,<\/strong> despite the seeming aggressiveness or aloofness. He appreciates beauty in any manifestation, and it makes him yet even more vulnerable to the discrepancy between the world around and his vision of what it\u2019s supposed to be. He strives for excellence in everything he does, and may turn quite intemperate in his judgments. No shades of gray \u2013 just black and white, real and unreal, truth or lies, which makes all technicalities and manipulations inherent to public opinion look hypocritical and snobbish. Nevertheless, he produces an image of a person who role models these manipulations, snobbishness and conformity \u2013 but that image is rooted in deeply sarcastic attitude to the surrounding world that cannot be changed, and playing by the rules he realizes that this is just a game, and any rule is more than relative.<\/p>\n
