Before the style emerged the artists never stood out from the crowd in terms of appearance.<\/p>\n<p>It was romanticists who first set <strong>art in opposition to life<\/strong>. In pursuit of their ideal, which was freedom, they resorted to subjects and images that did not comply with the generally accepted standards. In the world as seen by a romanticist artist the individual prevails over the universal, feelings and passion take the upper hand over duty and reason, fantasy replaces the norm, and the universal order gives the floor to chaos. Romanticists glorified everything exotic and extravagant. Their heroes were filibusters, vagabonds, revolutionaries and other queer sorts of fellows.
