You prefer expressionist landscapes. They are disturbing and cheerless, drastically different from landscapes in other styles – like romanticism, realism, impressionism etc. A realistic forest – Shishkin’s forest, for instance – is majestic and glorious, ancient and formidable. It’s the type we are used to seeing and admiring in real life.

Romanticist nature comes as the embodiment of the struggle between elements, or between man and time, man and nature, man and self, and so the romanticist landscapes are restless in a dynamic way, providing the emotional experience similar to the one triggering revolutions, winds of change and hopeful endeavours.

The restlessness we see in expressionist landscape is different – it is blunt and dragging, steady and desperate. Expressionist misery is not the feeling you get at a certain time or period due to some tragic events. This misery is treated as inherent to human existence, the foundation and the driver of being. A person is suffering because it is natural and inevitable. Expressionist canvases serve to convey an artist’s attitude to distress and to evoke compassion in the viewer.

This view of the world makes you look at nature from a different perspective. It appears to be the source of misery or its symbol. The colour planes are roughly contoured and stand in contrast with each other creating dismal atmosphere. The crude winding lines consisting of numerous loose-fitting brushstrokes look like serpents clasping round the deformed figures. Brokes and abrupt lines may seem to tear the canvases apart and evoke the painful discomfort. The scale and the perspective are distorted, the lines, colours and forms are hyperbolized to create tension and anxiety.

A person who prefers expressionist landscapes is extremely vulnerable and sensitive. Being of solitary disposition, he is very creative and it is incredibly important for him to find his vocation, some paasion in life, since it’s activity rather than communication that can really unleash his potential. He is chafing under the slightest possibility of betrayal or injustice. The older he gets, the heavier this baggage, since he cherishes his past memories far more intensely than other people. He does not stop half way, and once he starts trusting someone, he is capable of sacrificing whatever he has in life. It takes him years to recover from any neglectful behavior demonstrated by a beloved person. He is appreciative of care and loving attitude, and he won’t leave any sign of attention unanswered. He is in desperate need of a person who treats the world in a more optimistic and easy-going way to free him from the victimhood.
